A Monster Day!Be Ye Awares and Tread Ye with Much Caution! There be Monsters Swarming in Yonder Waters. |
We slowly drift away from our Inverness Airbnb after a few morning treats, including familiar breakfast cereals like Rice Krispies with boxes printed in Hebrew. We will leave Scotland's east coast and in a few hours be at our most exotic location, The Isle of Skye on Scotland's west coast.
But before we cross over all of Scotland to the Isle of Skye, we have some hunting to do. We return to my Clan Grant ancestral lands to hunt Nessie. If we fail to find Nessie (and, I believe our odds of failure in our cryptozoological search are great), we will have much better odds at hunting down some T-shirts and fridge magnets with the likeness of the famous Loch Ness Monster.
Ready for Nessie land? Ready!
1. Camera ready for any monster sightings.
2. Credit card and wallet brimming with GBP pounds ready for Scottish monster souvenirs.
Ah, look. I think they were expecting us. We and our credit cards are directed into the car park where we will be allowed to hunt for Nessie kitsch and tchotchkes.
We scour the murky depths of Loch Ness, finding no serpents swimming, we scour the shelves of T-shirts, hoodies, plush plesiosaurs, etc. We each find something to our liking.
Some among us want coffee and then some among us want lunch. Let us stroll into Drumnadrochit and see what is lurking in this small hamlet yonder.
As is now our custom, Grant has searched his iPhone, locating a cafe that will be a good fit for our lunch. We follow Grant downhill, across green glen and into charming Drumnadrochit.

Sue goes see what tea selections are available |
It is yet another quite pleasant day in Scotland. We will of course take the opportunity to dine al fresco. Tea and sandwiches, I order the quiche of the day. With my paleontology background, I wonder if quiche would be good bait to lure a plesiosaur like Nessie? I think I hear my mother calling, 'Don't waste a good lunch.' We finish our lunch and order dessert.
Don't feed the water monsters.
Piper plays on Drumnadrochit Green while we enjoy the skirling and dessert. |
A piper sets up in the adjacent village green as we finish our dessert. We tarry a wee bit to take in the sweet skirling Scottish sounds, as I have long been fond of the stirring, plaintive call of the pipes. The piper gets a few pounds flung into his case in appreciation of his enhancement to our day.
Swag purchased, swag stowed. We drive 20-plus winding miles along the shores of Loch Ness heading west southwest to our evening destination, the Isle of Skye.
